Past EV Projects

It's going to be slow while I collect components for the next step.  In the meantime here are some pictures from my 2nd electric car project, a 3-wheel Doran!
results may vary

I'd bought the 30 page instruction book before my 1st electric car project and always wanted to make one.  After 4 years of use my 1st electric car needed new batteries and I decided to salvage the components and junk it.

My friend and I drove to Iowa and bought this Doran frame from a man who'd given up, sanded the rust off and painted it green.

Mounted the motor (from my 1st project), transmission (Subaru), suspension, and wheels.

Began making the body with integrated roll cage.

Covering the form with foamto make the sandwich.  The idea was this would create a very light weight vehicle.

This was all done on the porch in front of my Airstream abode.  RIP Shady Grove.  The big tent was loaned by my friend's father.

Fiberglassin'!  The tent was enclosed with plastic sheet to for the resin to cure properly.

Cutting an entry to the innards to complete the sandwich, crawled in and fiberglassed the inside.

Flipped and working on the bottom.

Body meets frame.

The bumps in the body were smoothed out with bondo.

This is where the pictures stop.  It could move on a 12V battery, steer, shift gears, and the brakes worked.  Progress slowed and I sold it to my friend who had been helping me.  He finished it and took me for a ride!  He sold it some years later.

In the summer of 2013 it popped up on Ebay and I stole these pictures below.  The seller was very fair in the descriptions.  The car appeared to require a lot of care.

It's fun to compare how it didn't come out looking like the one in the manual.
